Seeking Dynamic Director of Early Childhood Education, Congregation Emanu-El, San Francisco, July 1, 2011

The preschool is a core component of Congregation Emanu-El, one of the oldest synagogues west of the Mississippi. The preschool helps integrate children and their families into the broader life of the synagogue, forming strong bonds between members and the Congregation that endure long after children leave the preschool.

Reporting to Emanu-El’s Rabbi Educator, the Director of Early Childhood Education will have overall responsibility for designing and managing all of the synagogue’s early childhood programming.  S/he will have a minimum of five years’ experience in a senior administrative role managing the daily operations of a preschool or day school, preferably a Jewish institution.  With passion, creativity, and vision, the Director will be highly knowledgeable of current theory and practice in early childhood education.

The preschool offers a developmentally appropriate, play-based program influenced by Jewish values and culture. Housed within Congregation Emanu-El’s building, the preschool’s activities consist of morning classes for children from ages two to five, extended day programming, and a summer camp.  With approximately 120 children enrolled at the school, the school maintains a low ratio of children to staff at six to one.
