San Diego Online Call for Proposals
ATE 2007 Annual Meeting Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, California February 17-21, 2007
The 2007 Annual Meeting of the Association of Teacher Educators will be held in San Diego, California. The theme selected by President Jane McCarthy is Reinventing the Educational Landscape: Renewing Hope, Heart and Vision for Teachers, Learners and Communities.
The conference will focus on the following strands:
Strand One: Communities as Classrooms
- Community Influences in classrooms and schools
- Community opportunities for learning and teaching
- Community as educational alternatives: Alliances with community organizations
- Research in the community that extends teaching and learning experiences
Strand Two: Technology as a Tool for Reinventing the Landscape
- Using images for teaching and learning
- Maximizing teaching resources through online Internet portals and other advancements
- Strategies and techniques to promote virtual teaching and learning
- Technology to expand ways of teaching and learning
- Supporting teachers in integrating technology
Strand Three: Role of Teacher as Change Agent
- Best practices in recruiting and retaining diverse teachers
- Unique challenges of urban and/or rural schools and classrooms
- Moving from experimentation to institutionalization in teacher education
- Political and social considerations in fostering teacher diversity
Strand Four: Collaborative Approaches to Re-inventing the Educational Landscape
- Innovative consortia and partnerships
- Successful alliances of schools and businesses
- New forms of pre-service and in-service collaboration
- Alternative designs for partnership schools, charter schools and others
- Partnerships for inclusive environments: General and Special education teachers working together
Strand Five: Creating New Pathways to Teacher Excellence
- Reinventing the teacher education landscape: New program approaches
- Common and uncommon features of alternative routes to licensure
- The role of community colleges in teacher preparation
- Beyond initial licensure: The role of professional development
Strand Six: Renewing Hope and Heart through Equity for All Learners
- Student and teacher voices: Stories of hope and heart
- Definitions of "highly qualified teachers" and what it means for schools
- Teacher use of standards and assessments to promote learning
- Responding to NCLB: Beyond meeting expectations
- Supporting new teachers in meeting the needs of all students
In order to submit your proposal online, prepare proposal documents in Word format according to the following instructions and attach them to emails using the link below.
Proposals of the following types of sessions are encouraged:
Professional Clinics Two-and-one-half hour clinics on Sunday, February 18, 2007, involve participants in activities that focus on the application of models, procedures, materials, or research. Proposals due June 2, 2006.
Thematic Sessions Fifty-minute sessions addressing the conference theme or other topics of interest to ATE members and other teacher educators are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 19, 20 and 21, 2007. These sessions may include the application of research, position papers, descriptions of existing programs/practices, or needed innovations in teacher education. Proposals due June 2, 2006. The following types of thematic sessions are encouraged:
A. Multiple Paper Format A thematic session provides an opportunity for authors to present a synopsis of their work. Generally, two or three related topics will be grouped by the planning committee. Each presenter will be given 10-12 minutes to present followed by a 20 minute question and answer period.
B. Single Paper Format Single paper presentations provide an opportunity for participants to share a synopsis of their work. The presenter typically allows 30-35 minutes to present followed by 15-20 minutes of discussion.
C. Roundtable Format Roundtables are informal sessions during which a presenter is seated at an individual large table to discuss works in progress that may not be ready for formal presentation. Tables are numbered to allow attendees to easily identify an individual presenter's session. Each discussion lasts 50 minutes. Proposals due June 2, 2006.
D. Research Reports Research papers are presented in 10-12 minute time segments. The paper presentations on related topics are grouped in fifty-minute sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 19, 20 and 21, 2007. A response is provided at the end of the session by a session chair/responder. If a proposal is accepted, the written paper is due to respective responders by January 5, 2007. Research should be original and not published prior to the conference. (Note: dates for Research Report presentations in San Diego were incorrect in the printed calls for proposals sent to ATE members. Correct dates are as listed above, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 19, 20 and 21, 2007.) Proposals due June 2, 2006.
E. Graduate Students Research Forum Graduate student papers (dissertations, proposals, theses, major papers) are presented in 10-12 minute time segments. Papers on related topics are grouped in fifty-minute sessions. Mentors meet with the graduate students prior to the session to provide specific feedback, answer questions and give tips on paper preparation. Advisors/chairs/ATE sponsors are encouraged to attend with their students. Proposals due June 2, 2006.
Proposal Submission
A. Cover Page for all submissions consists of one page which must include the following:
- 1. Title of Session.
- 2. Type of Session: Idenfity as Professional Clinic, Thematic Session, Research. If Thematic Session, indicate your preference: Single Paper, Multiple Paper, or Roundtable.
- 3. Session Organizer: List name, title, institution, mailing address, home and office phone number, fax number, and e-mail.
- 4. Additional Presenter(s) Address(es): List names, titles, institutions, addresses, including e-mail.
- 5. Subject descriptors: Identify strand this presentation most closely relates to and include three one- or two-word descriptors for the subject index.
- 6. Summary for Conference Program: Describe the session in thirty words or less for use in the conference program. Be precise in describing the content of the session to aid attendees in selecting topics relevant to their interests. Proposals which do not include this summary or go beyond the thirty word limit may not be considered. Summary may be edited by the Program Committee prior to the conference.
- 7. Participation: State whether you have previously presented at an annual ATE conference or if you are a graduate student.
B. Description of Presentation
Because proposals are subject to blind review, only title and abstract should be included.
All proposals for Professional Clinics, Thematic Sessions (Multiple Paper, Single Paper and Roundtables) must be typed, double space, and include the following:
- 1. Title
- 2. Objective of Presentation
- 3. Relationship to Conference Theme/Strands
- 4. Abstract of Presentation (250-500 words)
- 5. Description of Audience Participation
Research Reports (including Graduate Student Research Forum)
- 1. Introduction and Theoretical Framework
- 2. Research Objectives
- 3. Methods of Technique or Data Collection
- 4. Results/Conclusions/Implications for Teaching and Teacher Education
Due Dates and Submission:
Proposals must be e-mailed by Friday, June 2, 2006. Proposals should be submitted via e-mail to David Ritchey, Executive Director, ATE, as Word documents. E-mail address is dritchey@ate1.org.
General Information
A. Formats which utilize multiple presenters are encouraged. Graduate students and new ATE members are especially encouraged to submit proposals.
B. All presenters and session organizers are required to pre-register for the conference. Presenters should have 25 copies of handouts or materials for the attendees.
C. Audiovisual equipment is not provided by ATE. However, ATE will provide the name of an agency that can be contacted for individual presentation arrangements.
C. Information used in the program is copied from the proposal cover page. ATE reserves editorial rights. All communication is with the session organizer who is responsible for communication with other presenters of that session.
