2008 Award for the Distinguished Teacher Educator
Association of Teacher Educators
The award for the Distinguished Teacher Educator has been established by the Association of Teacher Educators and Cengage to recognize and honor those individuals in higher education or state departments of education who have advanced the profession of teacher education. To be eligible for the award a person must fulfill at least one of the following roles: educators whose primary roles include teaching and/or supervising preservice teachers, in-service teachers, and/or graduate students; or include program development, research and/or administration in teacher education.
Award Criteria
- Member of ATE for at least seven years.
- Nominated by State Affiliate or institution of higher education.
- Primary responsibilities are in higher education or state education department.
- Functions primarily as a teacher and/or supervisor of preservice, in-service teachers, and/or graduate students; or functions as a program developer, researcher or administrator of teacher education.
- Standards for Distinguished Teacher Educator:
- models professional teaching practices which demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes reflecting best practice;
- inquires into and contributes to one or more areas of scholarly activity that are related to teaching, learning, and/or teacher education;
- inquires systematically into, and reflects on, their own practice and demonstrates commitment to lifelong professional development;
- provides leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs for educating teachers that embrace diversity, and are rigorous, relevant, and grounded in best practice;
- collaborates regularly with school, university, state education department, professional associations, and community representatives to improve teaching, learning and teacher education;
- serves as informed, constructively critical advocate for high quality education for all students, public understanding of educational issues, and excellence and diversity in teaching and teacher education professions; and
- contributes to improving the teacher education profession, particularly through ATE.
Nomination and Selection Process
- Nomination packet must include:
- Cover page to include: nominee's name, address and telephone number, name and address of employer, job title with description of responsibilities.
- Sources of Evidence: There are a number of ways applicants can provide evidence that they meet the standards of a distinguished teacher educator. This evidence may include but is not limited to: professional resume, letters of support from students and colleagues, course evaluations, statement reflecting applicant's philosophy of teacher education and its relation to professional goals and accomplishments, documentation of program design/development, evidence of collaboration, etc. For more information regarding sources of evidence, contact the chair of the committee.
- Applicants will be assessed by their ability to meet the standards required of a distinguished teacher educator.
- Nomination Packet Format:
- 8 1/2 x 11", maximum of 30 pages.
- 8 copies should be included.
- must be received by July 25, 2009.
- Award recipient will be notified by November 1, 2009.
