From the President's Pen

By Annette Digby, ATE President 2009-2010

January 5, 2010

I hope that each of you had a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year. It’s hard to believe that the 2010 Annual Conference in Chicago is just a little more than a month away. Under the leadership of Conference Co-chairs Linda Houser and Emma Savage-Davis, the Planning Committee has put together an exciting, challenging program based upon the theme: “Owning the Future through ACTION: An Inclusive Vision for Teacher Education.” In addition to the general sessions and concurrent presentations, there will be many other noteworthy events.

I am excited about the general session speakers, each of whom will share insights related to the conference theme. Mr. Manuel V. Scott, an original Freedom Writer, is the keynote speaker for Sunday evening. I have had the opportunity to hear Mr. Scott on two separate occasions and can say without hesitation that we will all be touched by his personal experiences and will leave the session with a renewed realization of the impact that we as teachers have upon students. The Robert J. Stevenson Memorial Lecture on Monday morning will be a tribute to the late Dr. Rita Dunn (who, before her passing in summer 2009, had accepted our invitation to deliver the Stevenson Lecture). The third and fourth general sessions will be equally informative and professionally challenging with Dr. Daryl Siedentop, Emeritus Professor of Sport and Exercise Science in the College of Education and Human Ecology at the Ohio State University, and Dr. Betty Achinstein, a noted teacher-researcher from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Immediately following the Sunday evening opening session will the President’s Reception and Dance. All conference attendees are invited to enjoy the food, conversation, and entertainment.  Providing the music will be Dr. Larry Ross from Lincoln University (Missouri) and The Bubbas with Dr. Patrick Henry and his sons John Michael and Christian.    In addition to performing with The Bubbas, Dr. Ross will also provide music for the opening session. Those of you who have heard either The Bubbas or Dr. Ross know that we are in for an unforgettable evening that will “set the stage” for the rest of the conference.

If you haven’t already made plans for Chicago, it’s not too late. I invite you to go to the ATE website (www.ate1.org) for a draft program and other conference details. Hope to see you in the Windy City!

Until next time….
