Higher Education Task Force on Teacher Preparation Formed

Several higher education groups have formed a task force to attempt to influence the process that the U.S. Department of Education will follow in releasing proposed rules on teacher preparation. According to Stephen Sawchuk of Education Week, the Department is being pushed to release Title II rules on teacher preparation as soon as possible. The task force is seeking to ask Congress to have the Department take some of its concerns into account before the proposed rules are released.

The Higher Education Task Force on Teacher Preparation has released two documents, one outlining concerns with the federal rules and another detailing its own principles for evaluating teacher preparation programs.
The U.S. Department of Education's proposed regulations are expected to be released for public comment in September or October, before the national election. An effort to provide consensus teacher preparation rules reached an impasse earlier this year when negotiators, including ATE's Past President Jim Alouf, could not reach agreement. This meant that the Department could draft its own rules.
