The Association of Teacher Educators will hold a two-day Academy highlighting the importance of teacher research and the university-teacher partnership. As part of the Academy, ATE will join the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Teacher Research Network for its 14th Annual Teacher Research Conference. Nationally-recognized speakers, workshops, and roundtable discussions with teacher researchers will be part of these outstanding two days.
National Academy on Teacher Research
The April 28-29, 2005 ATE National Academy on Teacher Research highlights research and best practice in schools and colleges as well as discussions with leading national experts in the field. Over 50 sessions are scheduled for the Academy and the embedded 14th annual Fairfax County Teacher Research Conference. In addition to teacher researchers, speakers include Nancy Dana (University of Florida) Chris Brown (American Education Research Association) Robert Houston (University of Houston), Jim Nolan (Penn State University), Len Kaplan (Wayne State University) and many others.

Keynote Speakers Nancy Fichtman Dana is currently Professor of Education at the University of Florida, where she facilitates the development and sustainment of school-university partnership work across the College of Education. Prior to her appointment at the University of Florida, she served on the faculty in Curriculum and Instruction at The Pennsylvania State University for eleven years, where she developed and co-directed the State College Area School District Pennsylvania State University Elementary Professional Development School Program. Dana has authored numerous articles in professional journals focusing on teacher inquiry, teacher leadership, school-university collaborations, and professional development schools. Chris Brown II is the new American Educational Research Association (AERA) Director of Social Justice and Professional Development. Prior to this new appointment in January 2005, Chris Brown served as executive director and chief research scientist at the Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute at the United Negro College Fund and has been the associate professor of education and senior research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at The Pennsylvania State University. He also has taught at the University of Illinois. Brown, who is known for his studies of historically black colleges, educational equity, and institutional culture, is the author or co-author of more than 50 journal articles, book chapters, monographs and publications related to education and society. A former AERA-Spencer Foundation Fellowship recipient, Brown s research and scholarly writing on higher education policy and administration merited him both the 2001 ASHE Promising Career Award and the 2002 AERA Committee on Scholars of Color Early Career Contribution Award.
Who Should Attend This Academy is for teacher educators and teachers who are interested in expanding their understanding of the roles that teachers play as researchers and ways to build strong PK-12/university collaborations. School administrators, practitioners, and higher education personnel will find the Academy focus especially appealing in supporting education in the 21st century.
The Academy begins on Thursday morning, April 28, 2005, allowing attendees to fly in. Fairfax County Public Schools will host teachers from throughout the metropolitan area for a special session Thursday evening keynoted by Nancy Fichtman Dana. The program will conclude around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2005.
The Academy Setting The Academy will be held at the Waterford at Fair Oaks, a multi-function facility located in Fairfax, Virginia, within walking distance of a major regional shopping mall and convenient to attractions in the Washington area. Driving directions from Washington’s Capital Beltway (I-495): Take I-66 West to Rte. 50 West (exit 57B). Stay to the right and take the exit ramp for Fair Oaks Mall. Bear left, and turn left at the stop sign. Turn left at the Extended Stay America Hotel. Waterford at Fair Oaks is next to the hotel. If you fly into the Washington area, the Waterford at Fair Oaks is about fifteen miles from Dulles International Airport Hotel information: ATE has blocks of rooms available at two hotels within walking distance of the Waterford at Fair Oaks. Both hotels have special room rates of $80. Note: Hotel rooms are very tight in Washington at this time (close to the Cherry Blossom Festival). The two hotels listed above may be sold out. A block of rooms has also been reserved at the Hilton Garden Inn of Fairfax, 3950 Fair Ridge Dr., Fairfax, VA 22033. This hotel is across Route 50 from the Waterford, and shuttle arrangements to the Academy will be available. We have a special rate at this hotel of $89 per night on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, April 28-30. If you are coming to the Washington area on Wednesday, April 27, the hotel rate at this hotel will be higher.
