Workshops at the 2007 Annual Meeting
The following workshops will be offered on Saturday, February 17, 2007. Workshops 1 and 2 are full day (note times), Workshop 3 is a morning workshop, and Workshops 4 and 5 are afternoon. Register for these workshops on the ATE Registration Form
Full-day Workshops (9:00-4:00, except where indicated)
1. A DAY AT THE SAN DIEGO ZOO (Advanced Registration Required) $125.00 includes workshop registration, zoo admission, and transportation Workshop facilitators: Betty Crocker, University of North Texas and Sheri Sherman, San Diego Zoo Educator. This full-day workshop (7:45-4:00) explores strategies and activities to use in an outdoor thematic learning laboratory. The day will include early admission to the zoo, coffee and breakfast, 3-hour workshop on successful learning strategies for outdoors, lunch, and a biodiversity scavenger hunt. Also included is a personal behind the scenes tour of the zoo, and scaffolded zoo exploration. Rain or shine, participants meet in hotel lobby at 7:45 a.m.
2. ASSESSMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE NCATE SYSTEM $75.00, includes workshop registration and materials Workshop facilitators: Donna Gollnick and Margie Crutchfield, NCATE. The topic of this full-day workshop focuses on assessment data as evidence of meeting NCATE Standards at unit and program levels. Strategies for engaging colleagues in the design of assessments and collection of data to improve programs and candidate performance will be presented.
Morning Workshop (9:00-12:00 Noon)
3. SAY GOODBYE TO FILM: EXAMINE THE WORLD OF DIGITAL CAMERAS AND DIGITAL IMAGES Cost $40.00 includes workshop registration and materials Workshop facilitators: David McCarthy, University of Minnesota, Duluth, and Kathryn Smith, Minnesota State University-Bemidji. Explore how digital cameras can be used to enhance teaching and learning such as making PowerPoint books, seating charts, photo slide shows, incorporation into MS Word and PowerPoint, etc. Cameras will be provided. Beginners or Advanced.
Afternoon Workshops (1:00-4:00)
4. UNDERSTANDING CULTURE AND COOMMUNITY THROUGH MUSEUM EDUCATION (Advanced Registration Required) Cost $60.00 includes workshop registration, entrance fees, materials and transportation Workshop facilitator: Diana Bernshausen, University of North Texas. In this workshop, participants will visit the Museum of San Diego History and the Museum of Photographic Arts to learn about way to “view” and understand a local community and its culture. The goal of the workshop is to explore venues for integrating the arts into teacher education curriculum. Rain or shine, meet in the hotel lobby at 12:30
5. EXPLORE WHAT’S NEW IN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Cost $40.00 includes workshop registration and materials Workshop facilitators: David McCarthy, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Kathryn Smith, Minnesota State University-Bemidji Participants will explore a variety of new technologies that have great opportunities for educators. We will explore podcasting, furling, wiki’s, blogging, voice over IP, videoconferencing, new browsers/new features, rubistar and others. Beginners or Advanced.
