The Honorable Miguel Cardona

Secretary of Education
U.S. Department of Education

400 Maryland Avenue, SW

Washington, D.C. 20202

Dear Secretary Cardona:

The National Coalition of Educators is delighted and inspired that President Joe Biden has followed through on his promise to select a public school educator for the Secretary of Education. With your background and experiences, we are confident the U.S. Department of Education will shift its focus to inclusive equitable education for all students.

The National Coalition of Educators (NCE) joins together eleven education professional organizations and groups who share a passion and desire to advance the opportunities and outcomes of the education profession. The constituent membership, representing the entire PreK-20 continuum of the educator profession, share a commitment to the preparation of high quality teachers for our nation’s youth and improving student achievement. We collaborate in promoting high-quality, clinically based educator preparation grounded in evidence based research. NCE partner organizations have continuously advocated for a racially and socially just education system that addresses the opportunity gap and recruits more teachers of color into the profession.

The NCE comes together in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation with a strong recognition of the critically important work performed by each organization in supporting educators and advancing the profession.  Our organizations have had limited access and voice in the DOE regarding education policy that impacts teacher professional learning and development. We want to express our desire to be included in policy deliberations to share our collective expertise. The partner organizations of the NCE are designated at the bottom of this letter.

We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your team and will follow up in the near future with specific ideas for meaningful action. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the individual listed below representing our coalition and keep us in mind for ways we can contribute to your success as Secretary of Education.

About the National Coalition of Educators:

The National Coalition of Educators (NCE) has recently formed with the intent of bringing education professional organizations and groups across the country together to promote the profession.  Each organization has a shared commitment to the preparation of high quality teachers for our nation’s youth. Recognizing the common desire to support the profession of teaching, and educator preparation, the NCE has agreed to collaborate in promoting good practice, and to communicate each organization’s work within each other’s networks.  The group’s organizers share each other’s passion and desire to move the profession forward.  We hope to model effective cross-organizational communication by sharing organizational updates in our communal spaces while maintaining the services we provide to our own constituents.   The participating organizations who are engaging in monthly dialogue to share their work and to look at inflection points for collaboration include:

              •       The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE)
              •       The Association of Teacher Educators (ATE)
              •       The American Association for Employment in Education (AAEE)
              •       The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)
              •       Kappa Delta Pi (KDP)
              •       The National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP)
              •       The National Association for Professional Development Schools (NAPDS)
              •       The National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME)
              •       The National Education Association (NEA)
              •       The National Collaborative for Digital Equity  (NCDE)
              •       The National Teachers Hall of Fame (NTHF)

The NCE comes together in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation with a strong recognition of the critically important work performed by each organization in supporting educators and advancing the profession.

The coalition represents a pivot in the field toward increased cooperation in our educational space that allows for mutual benefits and mutual support for each other’s initiatives.  There is certainly enough work to do, and we know that a collective voice will be much stronger and have a far greater impact.

NCE will share with our constituents on a periodic basis, in order to communicate key messages, initiatives, and celebrations that are of importance to our members and the field of education.
